Islanders Edge Out Kaunikuila in Thrilling Fiji Cup Opener

The Islanders basketball team narrowly defeated the Kaunikuila All Stars 38-35 in the opening match of the Vodafone Fiji Cup at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva. Following the victory, head coach Manoa Puamau expressed his gratitude towards the loyal supporters who attended the tournament.

Puamau highlighted the team’s preparedness and dedication, stating, “The boys have been preparing well and the hard work paid off.” He acknowledged that one of the significant challenges faced by the team was coordinating training sessions, as some players are based in the West. Nevertheless, he credited their extensive experience from playing together for over six years as a key strength, allowing them to perform effectively regardless of the varying training schedules.

The Islanders pride themselves on being a feeder club for the national team, with seven of their athletes having competed in the national team for the Pacific Games in 2023. Puamau noted the abundance of young talent within the roster, with several players aspiring to join the Under-23 team. He expressed confidence in their ability to perform well, stating that the team’s skill is amplified by support from their fans.

Alongside the men’s results, the Women’s Fiji Cup showcased impressive performances, with Dynamic Reds triumphing over Kaunikuila Aces 62-27, while the Zodiac teams had a close battle, with the Wyverns edging out Tamahine 32-31.

As the Vodafone Fiji Cup progresses, there is a palpable sense of excitement in the community, manifesting as support for local teams and aspiring athletes.
