Island Team Triumphs: Aloha Taveuni Claims Historic 7s Victory

Garden Island’s Aloha Taveuni under-21 rugby team achieved a significant milestone by clinching the title in the under-18-21 division of the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s, held at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. The team narrowly defeated the AJ Pallet Ba River squad with a final score of 7-5 in an intense cup final.

Coach Noa Taveiwaka celebrated the momentous win, which mirrored their success at the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s last year. He expressed pride in his team’s accomplishments, particularly as this was their first participation in the Nawaka 7s and their inaugural venture into the western region of Fiji. “It’s an honor to come this far from the island and participate in the Nawaka 7s,” Taveiwaka stated.

The victory is particularly notable as the team competed without several key players due to injuries. Taveiwaka paid tribute to the team’s supporters and stressed the importance of their encouragement throughout the tournament. He mentioned Bill Vilimone, one of the injured players, emphasizing this win as dedicated to him and the support from his family.

In terms of future competitions, Taveiwaka confirmed that the team would not compete in the upcoming Fiji Bitter Marist 7s; however, the players will engage with other clubs during this time. This strategic decision could provide opportunities for continued development and exposure for the athletes.

This win not only highlights the team’s resilience and dedication but also reflects the vibrant spirit of youth rugby in Fiji, promising a bright future for these talented young athletes. Their journey is a testament to how community support and perseverance can lead to remarkable achievements in sports.
