Final-year law student and team captain Jone Nomani is exemplifying how humble beginnings can lead to remarkable global opportunities. Currently, he is representing the University of the South Pacific as part of its Hague Debate Team, where he is competing against some of the world’s top-ranked institutions.

Nomani shares his surprise at being chosen for the team, stating, “I didn’t even know what the interview was about at first. Then I received an email saying I was part of the USP team. I was surprised, but very grateful for the opportunity.” His debut came in a high-stakes matchup against The Hague University of Applied Sciences, which holds the second highest global ranking.

The experience was both exhilarating and daunting for Nomani, who found the challenge exhilarating despite the pressure. “It was nerve-wracking, knowing their ranking. But it was a good challenge for us. It’s all about hard work and teamwork. At the end of the day, you’re representing the entire university,” he noted. The debate topic revolved around climate change, a pressing concern for Pacific Island nations, highlighting the relevance and timeliness of the discussions being held.

Hailing from the outer islands and being the first in his family to attend university, Nomani openly acknowledges the difficulties of adapting to life in Suva. “There were pressures and expectations, sometimes from others and sometimes from yourself. But you have to keep going,” he reflects.

Encouraging fellow law students, Nomani emphasizes the importance of seeking support and collaboration. “If you are facing challenges, reach out. The only way to move forward is by working together.”

From his humble village beginnings to taking the stage on an international platform, Nomani’s journey serves as a powerful testament to determination, resilience, and the transformative power of education. His experience reminds us that challenges can be overcome through unity and perseverance, inspiring hope for young students everywhere.
