The government has been called upon to support Fijians residing in the most remote islands. Semi Koroilavesau, an Opposition Member of Parliament and former Minister for Fisheries, highlighted that communities on isolated islands rely heavily on government-generated resources. He mentioned specific islands, such as Yanuca, Ono-i-Lau, and Vatoa, noting that these areas lack essential agricultural and forestry opportunities.
Koroilavesau pointed out that the limited land prevents any significant agricultural development, and the area’s rocky terrain offers little potential for forestry. He expressed concerns that without government intervention, these communities would struggle to sustain themselves, relying almost exclusively on their seafood resources for income.
He urged the government to allocate necessary support and resources to the Minister for Fisheries to aid these isolated island communities.
