Beyond the headline

Isikeli Basiyalo will make his Swire Shipping Fijian Drua debut at Churchill Park today after receiving a surprise midweek call-up, the latest development in the club’s push to promote homegrown talent. The Nadroga-born backline utility was informed on Wednesday morning that he had been named in the matchday 23 for the Drua’s pre-season fixture at Lautoka, a moment he described as emotional and a lifelong dream.

“I wasn’t expecting to play on Saturday but I have been preparing well this season,” Basiyalo said after learning of his selection. He immediately rang his father to share the news. Hailing from the village of Volivoli with maternal links to Nabukelevu on Kadavu, Basiyalo carries the hopes of his family and community as he steps onto the Super Rugby stage for the first time.

Basiyalo’s rise has been steady. A former Cuvu College student, he represented Fiji at Under-20 level in both 2023 and 2024 before spending a full season with the Drua development squad in 2025. That season culminated in a full-time contract with the main squad for the 2026 campaign — a pathway the Drua have publicly promoted as part of efforts to deepen connections with provincial rugby across Fiji.

His sevens background also adds to his credentials. National 7s coach Osea Kolinisau called Basiyalo into the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s squad, and he made his international sevens debut at the Hong Kong Sevens in March 2022. Comfortable across the back three, he can cover both wing and fullback — versatility that has helped him earn a place among the matchday replacements.

The match at Churchill Park itself has significance beyond an individual debut. The fixture, arranged as a pre-season clash against a Provincial Select XV, was billed last year as a historic step to further link the Drua with domestic competitions and showcase local talent. Basiyalo’s elevation from development ranks into the main squad for this game underscores that objective and gives the Drua another local face to present to supporters in Lautoka.

Basiyalo said the support of the home crowd will be important as he makes his first appearance in Drua colours. While the call-up came late in the week and brought a mix of excitement and nerves, the young utility back has been preparing for such opportunities throughout his time in the development system. Today’s outing will therefore be seen as both a personal milestone and an early test of the Drua’s growing pathway system ahead of the Super Rugby season.

Coaches and selectors will watch closely to see how Basiyalo adapts to the step up. For the player himself, the moment is firmly rooted in family and community: the phone call to his father, the ties to Volivoli and Kadavu, and the journey from schoolboy rugby to an international sevens debut and now a Super Rugby debut at Churchill Park.
