Isikeli Basiyalo marked a dream debut for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua on Saturday, scoring his first Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific try after intercepting a Kurtley Beale pass and racing to the try-line in the 61st minute at Churchill Park. The Volivoli, Nadroga speedster’s score electrified the crowd and helped the Drua maintain the lead in a hard-fought encounter against the Western Force.
Basiyalo had only been told midweek that he would make the match-day 23, named on Wednesday to fill the vacancy created by season-ending injuries to wingers Ponipate Loganimasi and Epeli Momo. Club footage released ahead of the game showed the 21-year-old visibly surprised and emotional when he learned he would play. Fans and family who travelled to Churchill Park were on their feet as he crossed for the try that swung momentum firmly in the home side’s favour.
“I would like to thank the Lord for guiding and protecting me, even as I made my debut today,” Basiyalo told reporters after the match. “I thank Him for giving me the strength.” He was visibly moved by the support from relatives who had turned up in large numbers to cheer him on, and thanked them for backing his rugby journey.
Head coach Glen Jackson paid tribute to the youngster’s performance, saying the selection may have come as a shock to Basiyalo but was one he had long considered. “I’ve seen the potential in that kid for a long time and I’m just stoked that not only did he play well, but he gets the taste of victory the first time,” Jackson said during the post-match press conference, praising the winger’s work rate and composure under pressure.
Basiyalo’s rise to Super Rugby Pacific has been rapid but grounded in a clear development pathway. He progressed through secondary schools rugby, the Fiji National Rugby League Academy, the Drua Development squad and represented the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team in Hong Kong last year before earning his call-up to the Drua Super Rugby squad. The opportunity to step into the top-tier competition came sooner than many anticipated due to the injuries to Loganimasi and Momo, giving Basiyalo a platform to showcase his pace and finishing ability.
The match itself remained tense after Basiyalo’s try; the Force fought back with two further tries and a conversion but were unable to overturn the Drua’s advantage. For the Drua, the result provides a valuable boost as they close out their home fixtures for the season and tests the depth of a squad that has been forced to adapt to a growing injury list.
Basiyalo’s interception and finish will be remembered as the latest development in the Drua’s season — a reminder that opportunities can arrive quickly in Super Rugby Pacific and that young players from the domestic pathway can make an immediate impact when called upon. Glen Jackson’s public backing and the visible support from Basiyalo’s community suggest the winger could remain in consideration as the Drua navigate the remainder of their campaign.
