Former national sevens rugby player Isake Katonibau has made a heartfelt appeal for the Fijian government, Fiji Rugby, and educational institutions to provide fully funded educational opportunities for all past and present national rugby representatives. In his statement, titled “They Gave Everything for Fiji – It’s Time Fiji Gave Something Back,” Katonibau emphasized the sacrifices made by athletes who have worn the national jersey, often prioritizing their sport over their education, careers, health, and family time.

Katonibau reflected on the pride associated with representing Fiji, but he also highlighted the costs involved. He expressed concern that many athletes, years down the line, lack qualifications or a clear path forward due to the sacrifices they made during their playing careers. He insists that every person who has represented Fiji should receive free access to education, whether that be through a university degree, vocational training, or skill development opportunities.

Dismissing notions that athletes should feel grateful merely for the chance to play, Katonibau stated, “We didn’t beg to play. We earned it.” His proposal includes three specific actions: he urges Fiji Rugby to publicly support the initiative, calls on the government to fund education for all national representatives, and encourages educational providers and sponsors to join in making this vision a reality.

Katonibau’s advocacy aligns with ongoing discussions within Fiji Rugby, where a movement toward recognizing the educational needs of current and former players is gaining momentum. The Fiji Rugby Union has already begun exploring partnerships with accredited training institutions to facilitate educational programs for athletes transitioning into civilian life. The “Life After Rugby” program initiated by the Higher Education Commission also aims to support former players by providing vocational training tailored to their needs.

This movement signifies a growing recognition of the challenges faced by athletes once their sporting careers end and reflects a commitment to ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary for successful futures outside of rugby. Katonibau’s persistent push for action highlights an urgent need for structured support that acknowledges the contributions of athletes and invests in their well-being.

Such initiatives not only promise to uplift the individual lives of these athletes but also symbolize a broader cultural shift within Fiji, focusing on the importance of education and career development for those who have dedicated their lives to sport. The collective actions taken by stakeholders in response to these calls can help foster a brighter future for Fiji’s rugby community, where athletes are not only celebrated for their on-field achievements but are also supported in their journeys beyond the sport.
