Is Your Child’s Sleepover Now a Risky Business?

The Minister for Women and Children in Fiji, Lynda Tabuya, has expressed urgent concerns regarding the safety of children, particularly in the context of sleepovers with family members. Speaking on International Human Rights Day, she highlighted alarming trends of child neglect, linking these issues to rising incidents of violence and sexual harassment.

Ms. Tabuya emphasized that sleepovers, once considered harmless activities, now pose significant risks. She advised parents to keep their children at home after dark and to be vigilant about their whereabouts. The minister indicated that her ministry has noted an increase in reports of child neglect and abuse linked to inadequate supervision.

In her call to action, Ms. Tabuya urged parents and guardians to assume greater responsibility for their children’s welfare, which includes limiting screen time and fostering a secure family environment. She suggested that the solution lies in enhancing the home setting and making it a safer space for children.

Additionally, Ms. Tabuya addressed the issue of street children, acknowledging the ministry’s successes in removing children from the streets but recognizing the complexities of rehabilitation. Many of these children face challenges such as drug addiction, necessitating not only clinical support but also efforts to mend familial relationships and reintegrate them into society.

Despite the serious challenges, Ms. Tabuya noted the resilience and progress of many children in Fiji, who are abiding by the law and thriving within their families. She reiterated the need for families to create safe environments, particularly as many cases of abuse are perpetrated by family members.

To foster a brighter future, she called for community and family involvement to ensure that children feel loved, accepted, and nurtured, asserting that it is the responsibility of parents and caregivers to restore safety in the home.
