Is the National Development Plan a Hard Sell or Just Hot Air?

Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar criticized the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance for attempting to promote the National Development Plan in a persuasive manner that she claims is not resonating with the public. During her remarks in response to Professor Biman Prasad’s Ministerial Statement on the plan, Kumar emphasized the importance of understanding how ordinary citizens perceive the initiative.

Kumar raised questions about the daily experiences of people, asking how they feel when purchasing groceries, obtaining medications at pharmacies, or seeking services from various professionals such as lawyers or doctors. She highlighted the cost of living as a significant factor in their sentiments, referring to the impact of paying utility bills on their wellbeing.

While acknowledging claims of economic success, Kumar questioned whether the benefits of growth are reaching the populace. She characterized the National Development Plan as an idealistic proposal that fails to tackle pressing issues facing the community. Kumar urged the Deputy Prime Minister to enhance his efforts in communicating the plan’s value.

Additionally, she criticized Professor Prasad’s aspirations for transforming the country into a high-income nation, asserting that the Bainimarama Government has already made significant progress from no income level to achieving middle-income status.
