Super Rugby Pacific chief executive Jack Mesley has stated that the possibility of hosting a Bula Round in Fiji hinges on the construction of new facilities and meeting regulatory requirements. Mesley shared these thoughts just before the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua faced the Western Force at Churchill Park in Lautoka last Saturday.

“I would love to see a Bula Round here in Lautoka, in Fiji. To do that, we do need some facilities; we would need lights, we’d need more change rooms to be able to play that many games over a weekend,” Mesley explained. The Bula Round format, a unique aspect of the Super Rugby Pacific, entails hosting all matches of a single round at one location.

Mesley highlighted the potential for fans from Australia and New Zealand to travel to Fiji for the event, noting, “I know a lot of New Zealanders and Australians would travel and come here and experience the Fijian culture, Fijian rugby and so I think it would be a fantastic event.”

Further emphasizing the importance of the Fijian Drua, Mesley mentioned how the team has become an integral part of the Super Rugby Pacific, bringing vitality and culture to the league. “The Drua have been a great addition; they add so much flair, so much colour and so much culture to our competition,” he said.

This development aligns with previous proposals made by Fijian Drua CEO Mark Evans, who suggested the need for substantial government support to establish the Bula Round concept and improve Fiji’s sports infrastructure. Evans raised the necessity for accommodations and logistical planning similar to successful past Super Round events, enhancing prospects for sports tourism.

With the potential arrival of the Bula Round, there is reason for optimism that such an event could not only elevate Fiji’s sports profile but also invigorate the local tourism economy, showcasing the nation’s vibrant rugby culture and enthusiastic fan base. The ongoing discussions indicate a hopeful direction for both Fijian rugby and tourism, fostering a sense of unity and pride within the community.

As the Fijian Drua prepare for their upcoming match against the Queensland Reds, excitement is building for their future, underscoring a promising season ahead.
