Is It Time to Declare Ecocide? Ocean Management Takes Center Stage!

Ocean management is essential for addressing the pressing ecological and climate challenges we face, especially in small island nations. This was emphasized by Professor Shaista Shameem, Vice Chancellor of the University of Fiji, during a workshop on Marine Spatial Planning held in Lautoka last week.

She underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “The time is now, not only to consult but also to act.” Professor Shameem pointed out the severe implications for community survival and planetary health, noting that the term “ecocide,” linked to the climate crisis, has gained significant attention among Pacific nations.

Countries such as Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoa are already taking proactive steps. Their Prime Ministers have formally requested changes to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to define ecocide as an international crime.

“The time for dialogue has passed,” she asserted. “Now is the moment for action. As a lawyer, I feel a sense of urgency; the future of our planet and the next generation relies on our decisions today. Our efforts will not just empower our countries on the international stage but will also foster a legacy of responsibility towards future generations.”
