Is Fiji’s Government Silencing Dissent on Social Media?

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has criticized the Fijian Government for allegedly blocking citizens on their official Facebook page, claiming that it stifles constructive criticism and undermines public discourse. He expressed that this action contradicts the Coalition government’s claims of supporting democracy. Lal remarked, “How can the Coalition claim to champion democracy when it cannot even tolerate dissent on its social media platforms?”

He further condemned the practice, stating that blocking dissenting voices is a blatant attempt to suppress opposing views, allowing only positive comments and government propaganda to thrive. Lal urged the government to rectify this situation promptly, advocating for the unblocking of citizens to honor the principles of free expression. “Fijians will not be silenced by a government high on power and lacking in meaningful action,” he asserted.

This statement comes amidst broader concerns regarding freedom of speech in Fiji, especially following recent events linking the unregulated Facebook forum ‘ChatFiji’ to the death of social influencer Esala Seru Yalewamama. The forum has been criticized for hosting harmful and defamatory content, raising questions about trolling and online harassment in the country. Legal expert Jon Apted highlighted that freedom of speech should not extend to harmful personal attacks, stressing the need for public education on responsible online behavior and the limits of such freedoms.

Interestingly, these incidents reflect a growing sentiment among Fijians calling for accountability and constructive governance, as well as the establishment of a more respectful online culture. Engaging in open discourse, both offline and online, creates a platform for citizens to voice their concerns and participate actively in democracy.

The ongoing discussions signal a hopeful movement toward fostering responsible dialogue and steering Fiji toward a more inclusive atmosphere for discourse, where every citizen can contribute without fear of censorship.
