“Is Fiji’s Economic Growth Just for the Elite?”

Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed strong criticism of the Government’s economic policies, asserting that they are crafted to benefit a select few. In her remarks delivered in Parliament, Kumar highlighted the struggles faced by ordinary Fijians, pointing out that the rising cost of living has turned essential goods and services into luxuries that many cannot afford.

Kumar emphasized that families are forced to make agonizing decisions between necessary expenditures, such as medicine and groceries or rent and utility bills. In stark contrast, she noted the Government’s claims of a strong and thriving economy, questioning the tangible benefits of such growth. “If this is true, where is the impact?” she asked, emphasizing that it certainly is not seen among hardworking farmers facing escalating input costs, nurses and teachers seeking better prospects abroad, or small business owners battling to stay afloat.

She reinforced her argument that the Government’s economic strategies appear to be favoring privileged elites and multinational companies at the expense of the majority, who are left struggling. Citing the need for authentic economic progress, Kumar criticized the Government for focusing on statistics rather than the real-life experiences of its citizens.

Kumar advocated for policies that would genuinely uplift all Fijians, such as reducing VAT on essential items, providing robust support for small businesses, and creating local opportunities to stem the tide of skilled workers leaving the nation. She underscored that true success should be measured not by graphs and numbers, but by the well-being, opportunities, and dignity of the people.

Kumar concluded by reflecting on the harsh realities many Fijians are facing, noting that poverty is on the rise and more must be done to address these urgent issues.
