Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has urged the Government to enhance its preparations for the upcoming COP29 meeting in November. Mr. Seruiratu criticized last year’s preparations, asserting that they were inadequate, and emphasized that the Conference of the Parties (COP) is a serious event, not a vacation.
He pointed out that there were no pre-departure meetings, which left ministers and officials ill-prepared for the significant discussions that take place at COP. Seruiratu encouraged the Government to take advantage of the remaining months to organize and ensure that key personnel, including experienced figures like Ambassador Amena Yauvoli who led last year’s delegation, are well-informed.
He expressed hope that the Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office could organize these preparatory meetings, as effective preparation is crucial. According to the Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, last year’s delegation of 38 members lacked clarity about their representations, which may have incurred unnecessary expenses.
He echoed Mr. Seruiratu’s concerns regarding the quality of preparations and stressed the importance of adequately equipping the Prime Minister to lead the delegation effectively. Lalabalavu also noted the need to address the influence of wealthier nations that contribute to fossil fuel emissions and impact Pacific Island nations.
In response, Leader of Government in Parliament Ro Filipe Tuisawau acknowledged these concerns and assured that the Ministry of Climate Change is taking necessary steps to ensure better preparedness for the delegation at COP29.
