The Methodist Church in Fiji has expressed deep concern over the increasing issues of alcohol abuse and public disorder during the Christmas season. Church leaders are advocating for a return to the core values that define this festive time, emphasizing its spiritual significance rather than indulgence.

Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, the President of the Methodist Church, highlighted that the celebration of Christmas has strayed from its intended purpose, as many now associate the season with excessive drinking and unruly behavior. He stated, “Christmas is Christ’s birthday. Someone else’s birthday. Not my birthday, not your birthday, not our birthdays.” He underscored that the essence of Christmas should revolve around the love of God and the incarnation of Jesus into the world.

The Reverend called for a united effort among Christian leaders of various denominations to help restore the original message of Christmas, which is focused on spiritual devotion and reconciliation, rather than personal celebrations or excesses. He lamented that many people view Christmas solely as an opportunity for drinking and socializing, neglecting its true meaning.

The Methodist Church encourages families to engage in reflection, practice faith, and celebrate responsibly. They remind the community that Christmas is ultimately about embodying God’s love and presence, challenging everyone to prioritize the season’s spiritual foundations over indulgence. This call to action provides hope for a more meaningful celebration in the future, fostering a spirit of togetherness and faithfulness during the festive season.
