In response to mounting concerns over bomb threats targeting mosques and schools, as well as an increase in persecution, Australia’s Muslim community is urging the government to address Islamophobia with greater seriousness. A landmark report by Aftab Malik, the special envoy tasked with combating Islamophobia, proposes over 50 recommendations to counter prejudice. These measures include enacting federal religious freedom laws, updating religious discrimination legislation, and reviewing counter-terrorism policies to foster a fair and inclusive environment.

Despite these proposed measures, some advocates argue against the creation of specialized envoy roles, advocating instead for increased resources for the Human Rights Commission to address racism more broadly. The Australian Palestinian Advocacy Network has also criticized the government for focusing solely on Islamophobia. According to APAN executive member Lama Alqasem, the government’s approach fails to address the rise in anti-Palestinian racism and discrimination since October 7, which is viewed as a form of racism that denies Palestinians recognition, safety, and justice.

Malik’s report was released following recent incidents that included a bomb hoax at a Gold Coast mosque and a bomb threat at an Islamic school in Brisbane, leading to an evacuation of students and staff. These events contribute to a growing climate of fear and targeting, as highlighted by Nora Amath, the Islamophobia Register’s Queensland-based executive director, who notes an alarming escalation in such activities.

The call for action by Australia’s Muslim community reflects broader movements within the country addressing various forms of intolerance. Similar to the efforts against rising antisemitism in Australia, which have seen public and institutional commitments to reducing hate incidents, the response to Islamophobia underscores a need for collective governmental and societal effort to combat all forms of hatred and racism.

Despite the challenges of addressing these complex issues, there is an opportunity for Australia to reinforce its commitment to multiculturalism and inclusivity. By taking decisive action against racism and fostering dialogue among diverse communities, Australia can work towards a society where all cultural groups feel safe and respected. Such measures not only protect minority communities but also strengthen the social fabric of the nation.
