As society continues to integrate digital platforms and artificial intelligence into daily life, experts are sounding alarms about the potential rise in mental health issues and increasing loneliness. AI specialist Dr. Rohitash Chandra from the University of New South Wales cautions that without proper oversight, future generations may find themselves increasingly isolated from genuine human interactions.

Dr. Chandra emphasizes, “It’s not just AI; it’s the entire digital technology landscape. We need to use it responsibly. We are becoming overly reliant on these tools, which could lead to a very lonely society riddled with mental health problems.” He highlights the trend of individuals substituting human friendships with chatbots and other digital interactions, which may further contribute to feelings of isolation.

The expert notes the pervasive use of social media and digital platforms for communication and problem-solving in both personal and professional arenas. While these technologies offer conveniences, he warns that excessive dependence on them can undermine people’s confidence and diminish crucial face-to-face communication skills. Dr. Chandra insists that “strong analytical skills and independent thinking” remain vital in navigating life effectively.

He also points to a growing identity crisis that may be exacerbated by the misuse of digital technologies. To combat these trends, Dr. Chandra advocates for proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with an over-reliance on technology, citing that such an approach is essential for fostering a healthier, more connected society.

As digital technologies evolve, it becomes increasingly important to strike a balance between their advantages and the preservation of meaningful human connections. A collective effort to promote responsible usage could pave the way for a more mentally resilient future. While challenges abound, there is hope that awareness and proactive strategies will help maintain the essential human touch in an increasingly digital world.
