Prince Charles Park in Nadi, which is set to be renamed King Charles Park, was originally known as AD Patel Stadium. Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya brought this to attention during a Parliamentary debate concerning the Nadi Town Council’s annual report on Monday.
Mr. Koya remarked, “One thing that has been overlooked is that the actual name of the stadium is AD Patel Stadium, which seems to have been forgotten.” He noted that during his travels around Nadi, he had not come across the original name, suggesting it had been eliminated.
He emphasized the importance of retaining the name, stating, “It would not be honorable to remove that name without restoring it to the stadium. It commemorates someone who significantly contributed to our country’s history, and that recognition deserves to remain.”
Mr. Koya expressed hope that the original name would be reinstated, stressing its historical value. “Please take a look, and I hope it continues to be known as AD Patel Stadium as it has been for many years. He is a key figure in Fiji’s history.”
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa agreed on the necessity of renaming the park to King Charles Park due to the recent changes in the monarchy. He mentioned that the council has reached out to the British High Commission to seek protocol clarification on this name change.
