Fijian Paralympian Irene Mar wrapped up her remarkable campaign at the 2024 Summer Paris Paralympics, finishing seventh in the world rankings. Mar’s journey concluded in the quarterfinals of the Women’s K44-57kg category, where she faced a challenging match against Turkey’s Gamze Gurdal, currently ranked second in the world.
At just 19 years old, Mar gained attention earlier in the tournament by pulling off a significant upset in the round of 16, where she defeated Ukraine’s Yuliya Lypetska, the world number seven, to secure her place in the quarterfinals.
In the bronze medal repechage round, Mar encountered another formidable opponent, world number three Kamilya Dosmalova from Kazakhstan. Despite her strong performance, Mar fell short, losing the match 12-6.
