The ongoing unrest in Iran has resulted in over 500 fatalities, according to a rights group report released on Sunday. As the protests escalate, Iranian officials have issued stern warnings to the United States regarding potential military responses if President Donald Trump seeks to intervene on behalf of the demonstrators.

The latest figures from HRANA, a U.S.-based rights organization, indicate that 490 protesters and 48 security personnel have lost their lives, with more than 10,600 individuals arrested during the unrest that has persisted for two weeks. However, Iran has not officially confirmed these figures, and independent verification by Reuters has not been possible.

President Trump is set to meet with senior advisers to explore possible actions regarding the situation in Iran. Reports suggest various options, including military strikes, cyberattacks, expanded sanctions, and support for anti-government activists. “The military is looking at it, and we’re looking at some very strong options,” Trump stated to reporters while traveling on Air Force One.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf cautioned against any missteps by the U.S., asserting that any attack on Iran would prompt retaliation against U.S. bases and Israel, which he referred to as “occupied territories.”

The unrest began on December 28, primarily in response to soaring prices but has evolved into broader demonstrations targeting the clerical leadership that has ruled since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iranian authorities have accused the U.S. and Israel of inciting chaos, calling for nationwide rallies to condemn what they have labeled “terrorist actions.”

Recent social media footage illustrated the intensity of the protests, with large crowds marching in Tehran and reports of fires and violence in Mashhad. The Iranian government’s access to information has been significantly restricted by an ongoing internet blackout.

In response to the violence, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed horror at reports of governmental repression and emphasized the need for the rights to free expression, association, and peaceful assembly to be upheld. Additionally, Iranian authorities have declared three days of national mourning to honor those they deem “martyrs” in the struggle against the U.S. and Israel.

As the situation in Iran continues to unfold, there remains a glimmer of hope that dialogue and international attention could lead to a resolution that respects the rights of the Iranian people while promoting peace in the region.
