A 40-year-old woman is set to appear in court today facing charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage. The case dates back to July 24, 2024, when it is alleged that she fraudulently acquired $165 from a victim via the M-Paisa platform.
The incident unfolded when the victim came across a Facebook post advertising an iPhone for sale at the price of $330. After expressing interest in the purchase, the victim contacted the accused, who instructed her to send a $165 deposit, promising that the phone would be sent to her through courier.
After transferring the money, the victim found herself unable to reach the accused, prompting her to file a report at the Tavua Police Station. Subsequently, the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team charged the accused, who is currently in custody and will appear at the Magistrates Court in Nabouwalu.
This case highlights the importance of exercising caution when making online purchases. It serves as a reminder for individuals to conduct thorough research and ensure the legitimacy of sellers to prevent falling victim to scams. As authorities work to address such fraudulent activities, there is hope that increased awareness and vigilance among the public will lead to a reduction in similar incidents in the future.
