The Commission of Inquiry (COI) is seeking an extension of the investigation deadline regarding the death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. Chairman Edwin Wainiqolo announced that the inquiry would benefit from an additional two weeks to finalize its findings, as key figures, including South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) promoter Fred Chand and director Mohammed Shameem, have yet to be interviewed.
Initially, Shameem was scheduled for an interview yesterday afternoon, but it was postponed due to the inquiry team attending an important meeting in Suva. Wainiqolo confirmed that Shameem’s interview will now take place via Zoom on Monday. He noted that geographical logistics have affected scheduling, as he resides in the West while the other panel members are in Suva.
Moreover, a formal request will be made to Chand’s lawyer, granting a seven-day deadline for a response. Should there be no feedback by next Friday, the Commission will proceed without Chand’s input.
In a statement from Vancouver, Canada, Shameem expressed his willingness to cooperate; however, he voiced frustrations regarding the blame directed at him and SPBP from Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan. Shameem asserted his extensive experience in boxing and conveyed confidence in his understanding of the sport’s regulations.
Haider, who participated in a match on October 26 against Sydney-based boxer Runqi Zhou for the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title, collapsed after sustaining injuries that eventually led to his hospitalization. After undergoing surgery, he tragically passed away on November 10.
This unfolding situation highlights the complexities surrounding sports safety and regulatory oversight, prompting a crucial dialogue in the boxing community about ensuring the well-being of athletes during competitions. As the investigation progresses, it is hoped that it will lead to improved measures to protect athletes and prevent future tragedies in the sport.
Summary: The Commission of Inquiry seeks a two-week extension to complete its investigation into boxer Ubayd Haider’s death, pending interviews with key individuals. Despite setbacks, the inquiry aims for thoroughness, stressing the importance of athlete safety in boxing.
