The Board of Inquiry (BOI) is nearing the conclusion of its investigation into the death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider, with its chairman, Edwin Wainiqolo, confirming that they possess sufficient documentation for a conclusive assessment. The body has faced challenges in interviewing all relevant stakeholders, including South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) promoter Fred Chand, who currently resides in Sydney, Australia. Despite multiple attempts to contact Chand, complications have prevented the BOI from securing his testimony.

Wainiqolo noted that the investigation aims to finalize its findings in time to present a report to Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, by next Monday. Haider tragically collapsed during a bout against Runqi Zhou on October 26, 2023, and passed away following surgery on November 10.

Minister Saukuru emphasized the need for patience and respect regarding the ongoing inquiry, especially considering the emotional impact on Haider’s family. He has advised others involved to refrain from commenting prematurely about the case, highlighting the importance of allowing the investigation to conclude fully and fairly. Saukuru expressed hope that the findings of this report could contribute to improving boxing safety standards in Fiji.

Commenting on the investigation, Wainiqolo indicated that the BOI panel has met and is in the final phases of deliberation, with the aim to relay comprehensive judgments that could potentially influence policy changes in the sport. The inquiry underscores a concerted effort within the boxing community to address safety concerns and seeks to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The ongoing process ultimately reflects a commitment to accountability within sports, aiming to ensure that all athletes can compete under safe conditions. As the inquiry progresses towards its conclusion, there is optimism that it will lead to meaningful reforms within the boxing community in Fiji.
