The investigation into the tragic death of boxer Ubayd Haider continues as the Board of Inquiry announces they have yet to interview five key stakeholders, including promoter Fredy Chand. During a recent press conference, BOI chairman Edwin Wainiqolo shared that 12 out of the 17 stakeholders involved in the October promotion in Nadi have already been interviewed.
Chand, who has sought legal representation, is among those yet to provide testimony. Wainiqolo mentioned that the Board has issued invitations to the promoter and the financier, but negotiations with Chand’s legal counsel have delayed the interviews. This delay has prompted the investigation, originally set for 30 days, to extend by an additional week.
Wainiqolo emphasized the importance of a comprehensive inquiry, stating that they aim to interview everyone involved in the promotion, from ringside doctors to judges, and even individuals present in the changing room. The investigation aims to gather extensive information surrounding the events leading up to Haider’s passing on November 10 at Lautoka Hospital, following his defeat to China’s Runqi Zhou.
Despite the delays, Wainiqolo expressed that the Board may still submit their findings to the Minister for Sports, Jese Saukuru, even if some stakeholders, including Chand, choose not to participate in the interviews by the deadline. Ultimately, the Minister will decide if further action is needed based on the findings.
This ongoing investigation underscores the serious nature of athlete safety in boxing and highlights the commitment of the Board of Inquiry to uncover the circumstances surrounding Haider’s death. There is hope that seeking accountability and understanding from this inquiry may lead to improved safety measures in future boxing events, ensuring that the welfare of boxers is prioritized.
