The Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, is scheduled to receive the Office of the Auditor-General’s report regarding the investigation into Walesi Pte Limited this week. Mr. Kamikamica made this announcement during his recent visit to Labasa, where he addressed public concerns about the state-owned digital television service.
The investigation, which began last year, focuses on allegations related to excessive spending and irregularities within Walesi’s operations. Mr. Kamikamica noted that he has heard various concerns and is prepared to report any significant findings to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.
Last year, the minister initiated the inquiry to assess whether proper procedures were followed in the financial management of Walesi. This scrutiny includes evaluating the allocation of funds, compliance with tender processes, vendor selection, and procurement activities that have taken place since Walesi was established in 2015.
During a parliamentary session, Mr. Kamikamica indicated that around $125 million was spent on establishing Walesi under the previous administration. The auditor-general’s report is anticipated to shed light on whether these expenditures were justified and managed effectively.
This investigation represents a crucial step in ensuring transparency and accountability within state-run enterprises. With a detailed report on the horizon, there is potential for significant improvements in the governance of public resources in the future. The minister’s commitment to addressing concerns and ensuring integrity within the system can foster greater public confidence in government operations.
