A thorough investigation is currently being conducted to identify the cause of a fuel leak at the Petro Oceania Fuels Terminal located in Walu Bay, Suva. The leak was first detected around 5 a.m. yesterday and prompted the immediate activation of the company’s emergency response protocols to contain the spill, safeguard public health, and mitigate any environmental damage.
According to the National Fire Authority (NFA), by 8:30 a.m., the fuel level in the affected terminal was measured at eight meters, indicating an estimated volume of 1,160,000 liters. By 11:40 a.m., the level had decreased to 7.5 meters, signifying a loss of approximately 180,000 liters of fuel.
Petro Oceania reported that its onsite team quickly isolated and contained the leak within the terminal area. They promptly informed both the Fiji Police Force and the NFA, who assisted in managing the incident. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or environmental harm. CEO James Marryatt reassured the public that all fuel is now being safely transferred to alternative storage.
“We are committed to ensuring that no harm has come to individuals or the environment,” Marryatt stated. He emphasized the professionalism of the staff, who adhered to emergency procedures effectively while collaborating with emergency responders.
The investigation’s results will play a crucial role in developing remedial measures to prevent future incidents. Marryatt expressed gratitude to the emergency teams and terminal staff for their rapid response during the crisis, noting, “Sincere thanks are due to the Fiji Police and the National Fire Authority for their prompt assistance.”
Petro Oceania is fully cooperating with regulatory agencies and plans to share a comprehensive report with stakeholders once the investigation concludes. This commitment highlights the company’s dedication to transparency and the safety of the community it serves. Through proactive measures and collaboration, Petro Oceania aims to restore confidence and enhance safety protocols in the future.
