The Ministry of Health’s permanent secretary, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, has announced that officials have yet to identify the source of an alleged poisoning incident that resulted in seven foreigners requiring hospitalization on Sunday. During a media briefing, Dr. Tudravu confirmed that the patients remain under care at Lautoka Hospital and mentioned that the Fiji Police Force is performing its own toxicology analysis related to the case.
Dr. Tudravu noted, “We don’t have the results of the investigation yet and we don’t know whether it was spiking or any other cause.” Meanwhile, following the incident, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) updated its travel advisory to alert travelers to be cautious about the risks of drink spiking and methanol poisoning from alcoholic beverages. The advisory stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if any suspicions of drink spiking arise. The Fiji Police have also confirmed that they are actively investigating the situation.
This incident underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and awareness, particularly when engaging in social activities involving alcohol. While the investigation is ongoing, it is reassuring to see health and safety organizations taking proactive steps to protect both locals and tourists alike.
In summary, authorities are currently looking into an alleged poisoning case involving seven foreigners, with investigations underway to determine its cause, while health advisories remind travelers to stay vigilant.
