Two members of the Commission of Inquiry investigating the death of featherweight boxer Ubayed Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, have announced their resignation. The individuals stepping down are Pita Driti, former Land Force Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, and Adi Narayan, the chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji.
Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru confirmed these developments, stating that Narayan has opted to excuse himself from the three-member inquiry team to ensure that the investigation remains transparent and independent. Narayan noted that he has fulfilled his responsibilities in establishing the committee and hopes that it will carry on without his involvement. Driti also cited a potential conflict of interest as his reason for stepping down.
The inquiry still requires a third member, with Saukuru indicating that they are in the process of finalizing this addition. Currently, Philip Eneriko, the director for Youth and Sports, and Edwin Wainiqolo, a Lautoka-based lawyer, are part of the commission. Wainiqolo will lead the investigation.
The inquiry will convene on Friday to conduct interviews related to Haider’s tragic collapse after his IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title fight on October 26. He was subsequently hospitalized and underwent surgery but tragically passed away on November 10 and was laid to rest shortly thereafter.
In a related development, Narayan confirmed that boxing promotions will continue, with several promoters renewing their licenses for the upcoming year. Notably, Bluewater Boxing Promotions is planning to host its first event of several in 2024, with announcements expected in December regarding these promotions. Promoter Samir Khan is anticipated to introduce his next boxing event in the near future.
This news reflects ongoing efforts to uphold the integrity of the sport in light of recent events, and the commitment to transparency in the investigation signifies a positive direction for the community.
In summary, while the inquiry into Haider’s death continues to unfold, the boxing community is actively preparing for the future with several upcoming promotions, demonstrating resilience amidst tragedy.
