A former commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ Land Force is part of a three-member team assigned to investigate a serious boxing incident that occurred last Saturday at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. The investigation involves Pita Driti, Ministry of Youth and Sports director Philip Heneriko, and Boxing Commission of Fiji chairman Adi Narayan. They will interview all relevant stakeholders to gather information about the events that transpired during the match.

During a press conference in Suva, Narayan revealed that the investigative team has been allotted 30 days to complete their inquiries. This timeframe was confirmed following consultations with Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, who is currently abroad.

The issue at hand involves featherweight boxer Umbayd Haider, who is in critical condition at Lautoka Hospital after undergoing head surgery on Sunday. Haider collapsed in the ring after suffering a technical knockout loss in the ninth round to Australia’s Runqi Zhou while competing for the IBO Asia Pacific title. Narayan emphasized that this match was sanctioned by both the IBO and the Boxing Commission of Fiji.

As part of the investigation, the team plans to interview all involved parties, including the IBO fight commissioner, the referee, and the judges who were present. Additionally, they will assess whether the cornermen had the appropriate licenses to be in the ring and examine why drug testing protocols for boxers were not followed after the fight.

This thorough investigation highlights the commitment to ensuring the safety and regulation of boxing in Fiji. With the involvement of respected figures in both the military and sports sectors, there is hope that the findings will lead to improved safety measures and accountability in future matches, ultimately fostering a safer environment for athletes.

In summary, a dedicated investigation is underway regarding a boxing incident that left a fighter critically injured, with a focus on accountability and safety in the sport.
