Police have confirmed that they are investigating a recent incident involving two crew members from Virgin Australia in Nadi as an alleged sexual assault. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime, Mesake Waqa, provided details stating that the incident was initially reported as rape. However, at this stage, it is classified as sexual assault pending further investigation.

Mr. Waqa explained that specific legal criteria must be satisfied to officially categorize the incident as rape. Investigators are currently gathering evidence to establish the facts. “At the moment, these are allegations, and we are prioritising it,” he stated, emphasizing that they will determine the correct classification as investigations unfold.

The police have already collected statements from the two airline crew members involved, but no charges have been filed so far. Mr. Waqa reassured the public that the authorities are treating this matter with utmost urgency, and charges will be determined based on the evidence collected during the inquiry.

In response to the incident, Tourism Fiji has opted not to comment. CEO Brent Hill acknowledged being aware of the situation but directed all media inquiries to the Ministry of Tourism for comments. There is limited information available regarding the presence of family members of the affected crew in Fiji, although sources indicate that a senior manager from the airline is currently at the same hotel where the crew is staying.

As the investigation continues, police are expected to release more details once they have significant updates to share.

This situation highlights the importance of thorough investigations in sensitive cases, ensuring that all parties are treated fairly while maintaining the integrity and safety of the community and visitors. It is a reminder of the commitment of local authorities to address such serious allegations promptly and rigorously.
