Investigation Launched: Apple Gift Card Scams in Fiji

The Consumer Council of Fiji has initiated an inquiry into a mobile electronics retailer in Suva after discovering significant issues with the sale of Apple gift cards. These incidents raised concerns about the handling and fulfillment of such transactions.

In the first case, a customer intended to purchase Apple gift cards and paid FJD $5,000 for cards worth $1,600 USD. After placing the order on June 21, 2024, the customer only received a $500 gift card. Despite several attempts to obtain the remaining $1,100 USD worth of cards, the buyer had to seek assistance from the Council.

In another case on June 14, 2024, a different customer spent FJD $7,000 on gift cards. Although the seller promised quick delivery, the buyer faced numerous unanswered calls and delays, as the cards were not sent after multiple follow-ups.

These incidents might be isolated or indicative of a broader issue. Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council, pointed out the concerning nature of these transactions, urging consumers to be cautious when spending large amounts on such products.

Shandil emphasized the importance of confirming that vendors are authorized retailers to safeguard consumer rights. The Council’s investigation found that the retailer had not provided proof of being an authorized dealer for Apple products, calling into question the legitimacy of the gift card sales and other related services.

Customers are advised to be vigilant during significant transactions, and the Council is working to address these concerns to protect consumer rights and prevent future incidents.
