The investigation led by the Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Edwin Wainiqolo, is expected to conclude this week. During a recent interview, Wainiqolo shared that the inquiry is in its final stages, with only one person left to be interviewed—former South Pacific Boxing Promotion promoter Fredy Chand.
Wainiqolo noted that the investigation follows the tragic incident resulting in the death of Ubayd Haider. He mentioned that they have already completed interviews with Mohammed Shameem and expressed gratitude towards Chand for his willingness to participate despite living overseas, making scheduling challenging due to time differences.
The findings of this investigation will be submitted directly to Jese Saukuru, the Minister of Youth and Sports. Should further clarifications be required, a press conference will be held to discuss the issues and present the findings.
This inquiry underscores the importance of accountability in sports and reinforces the commitment of authorities to uphold safety and transparency in boxing promotions. The anticipation surrounding the upcoming conclusions may pave the way for necessary reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
