The investigation into the boxing incident that led to the unfortunate death of Ubayd Haider is expected to conclude this week. This update was confirmed by Edwin Wainiqolo, the chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry, during an interview.
Wainiqolo shared that the investigation is almost complete, with only one person remaining to be interviewed—Fredy Chand, the former promoter of South Pacific Boxing Promotions. He indicated that Mohammed Shameem has already been interviewed as part of the process.
Chand has agreed to assist with the inquiry, although scheduling conflicts due to time differences have delayed his interview. He currently resides overseas, making direct communication challenging for the commission based in Fiji. Wainiqolo expressed gratitude for Chand’s willingness to cooperate.
Once the investigation concludes, the findings will be submitted to Jese Saukuru, the Minister of Youth and Sports. Wainiqolo stated that if further clarification is needed, a press conference will be held to address the issues and present the findings.
This timely investigation reflects a commitment to accountability and transparency in the sports community, and it is hoped that the findings will provide closure for those affected by this tragic event.
It is reassuring to see the investigative process moving forward, as it demonstrates a proactive approach towards enhancing safety and standards in sports organizations.
