The investigation into the death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider will soon be made public, as stated by Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru during a parliamentary session. This announcement came in response to a query from Opposition MP Prem Chand regarding the Boxing Commission of Fiji’s alleged failure to secure insurance for boxers competing in the October 26 program in Nadi.
Minister Saukuru noted that the three-member Board of Inquiry is still in the process of conducting interviews, particularly with individuals based overseas, and has not yet completed their investigation. He assured Parliament that a ministerial statement will be issued at an appropriate time, and the findings will be made available to the public.
Emphasizing the respect owed to Haider’s contributions to Fiji, Saukuru urged patience as the investigation continues to uncover the details surrounding the events of that night. Currently, he is unable to disclose further information.
This situation highlights the importance of transparency in sports and the need for adequate safety measures for athletes. As the investigation progresses, it is hoped that it will lead to improved practices and regulations that protect the well-being of all boxers, ensuring that no athlete’s sacrifice is in vain.
Overall, this inquiry could pave the way for positive changes in the sporting community, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all athletes involved.
