The Commission of Inquiry (COI) is seeking an extension from the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, in their investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. COI chairman Edwin Wainiqolo announced that the investigation requires an additional two weeks to be completed, as they still need to interview South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) promoter Fred Chand and director Mohammed Shameem.

Shameem’s interview, originally set for yesterday, was postponed due to a scheduling conflict with the investigation team’s meeting in Suva. Wainiqolo confirmed that they would conduct the interview with Shameem via Zoom on Monday. Additionally, he mentioned that a formal request would be sent to Chand’s lawyer, urging a response within seven days. If there is no reply, the COI will proceed without him.

In a statement from Vancouver, Canada, Shameem expressed his readiness to participate in the interview and accused Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan of unfairly assigning blame to them. He emphasized his extensive experience in boxing, stating, “Boxing is in my blood,” and that he understands the rules of the sport intimately.

The inquiry stems from the unfortunate incident on October 26, when Haider collapsed after being stopped in the ninth round by Sydney-based boxer Runqi Zhou during the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title fight held at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park. He was rushed to Zen’s Medical before being transferred to Aspen Hospital in Lautoka, where he underwent head surgery while in a coma. Sadly, Haider passed away on November 10.

Overall, while the investigation seeks to uncover the details surrounding this tragic event, it is also a crucial moment for the boxing community to reflect on safety measures and protocols, ensuring that similar incidents are prevented in the future. The commitment of the COI to diligently investigate this case illustrates a dedication to accountability in sports and highlights the importance of athlete welfare.
