Nearly two years after the 2022 General Elections, there has been little progress on the investigation into the controversial vote counting ‘glitch’ that occurred during the election process. The Electoral Commission has previously expressed understanding regarding the government’s procedural delays, but the lack of updates remains concerning for many.
During a forum on cybercrime and electronic evidence tailored for Pacific Islands at Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji in Nadroga, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga revealed that the investigation report is still under review considering recent developments. He mentioned that discussions have been ongoing with the Electoral Commission, and he anticipates a forthcoming meeting with the Supervisor of Elections to delve deeper into the primary findings that have been identified.
“Only when Cabinet is informed will we be able to fully disclose,” Turaga noted, indicating that the next steps are contingent upon their findings and subsequent Cabinet discussions.
While the prolonged nature of this investigation may be frustrating for the public, it is critical for ensuring that the electoral process is transparent and credible moving forward. Engaging in thorough discussions and investigations could ultimately lead to improvements in future elections.
As the situation unfolds, there is hope that accountability and clarity will emerge from these discussions, fostering greater confidence among voters and strengthening the democratic process in the region.
