Investigation Findings Pending After Hibiscus Festival Harassment Claims

The independent investigation into harassment allegations that arose on the crowning night of the Hibiscus Festival has concluded. The results of the investigation have been submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for further examination.

Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, confirmed this update but did not provide additional details regarding the findings. He emphasized that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, adhering to council policies.

The inquiry was conducted by an independent panel, which included the Chair of Suva City Council, a legal expert, a public safety specialist from an external event management firm, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.

“We are committed to ensuring that the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, fully compliant with legal and regulatory standards,” stated Mr. Nalumisa. He also noted that a separate police investigation is currently ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.

Background information reveals that allegations of sexual harassment emerged after a contestant expressed discomfort, citing incidents of ‘groping’ during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
