The Commission of Inquiry (COI) has sought an extension from the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, to continue their investigation into the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. COI chairman Edwin Wainiqolo stated that an additional two weeks are necessary for the investigation to be concluded, especially since important individuals, including South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) promoter Fred Chand and director Mohammed Shameem, have yet to be interviewed.
An interview with Shameem was originally planned for 4 PM yesterday but was postponed due to a scheduling conflict, as the investigation team needed to attend a meeting in Suva. Wainiqolo confirmed that Shameem would be interviewed via Zoom on Monday. He mentioned the logistical challenges, as he resides in the West while the rest of the panel members are based in Suva.
The panel also announced that they would be reaching out to Chand’s lawyer, demanding a response within seven days. If they do not receive a reply, the COI plans to proceed with their investigation without him.
Responding from Vancouver, Canada, Shameem expressed his readiness to be interviewed and lamented that the rescheduling was necessary. He further noted that Adi Narayan, chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF), has been placing blame on them regarding the situation.
Shameem emphasized his long-standing involvement in boxing, asserting his familiarity with the sport’s regulations. He shared his frustration over being unjustly accused by Narayan.
Haider’s passing followed a match on October 26 against Sydney-based boxer Runqi Zhou for the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title. After collapsing in the ring post-match, Haider was taken to Zen’s Medical and later transferred to Aspen Hospital in Lautoka, where he underwent surgery due to his coma. Tragically, he passed away on November 10.
The ongoing investigation serves a crucial purpose, as it aims to seek clarity and accountability in light of Haider’s untimely death. As the inquiry progresses, it is essential for all parties involved to prioritize transparency and cooperation to honor the memory of the late athlete and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
