InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa leads large-scale Natadola Beach cleanup, removing 700kg of litter

A sweeping beach cleanup at Natadola Beach in Nadi, conducted by staff and management of the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, cleared more than 700 kilograms of litter in a few hours earlier this month. The effort was part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ global sustainability initiative, Journey to Tomorrow, and supported Tourism Fiji’s Bin It or Bag It campaign, which encourages visitors and locals to dispose of waste responsibly.

The resort described the operation as a clear demonstration of how responsible travel can protect one of Fiji’s most treasured assets. “Natadola Beach is a public space that brings joy to locals and guests alike,” the statement noted. “Cleaning up in partnership with community members reinforces our commitment to safeguarding the environment that defines the Fijian travel experience.”

Lachlan Walker, IHG’s regional general manager for Fiji and the Pacific, said the cleanup highlighted both the scale of the challenge and the power of collective action. “Our colleagues see themselves as custodians of Natadola Beach, caring for it not only for our guests but for the local community and future generations,” he explained. “Collecting over 700 kilograms of litter in one morning shows the scale of the challenge, but also the power of collective action. The solution lies in everyone playing their part. We also support Tourism Fiji’s simple call to action – if you can’t bin it, bag it, and take it home.”

Beyond the one-off event, the resort continues to weave sustainability into its guest and community experiences through initiatives like Loloma Hour, a weekly program focused on giving back. One ongoing effort, Litter for Latte, rewards participants who bring a bag of rubbish with a complimentary coffee, turning a simple act into meaningful stewardship.

Natadola Beach, a popular spot for picnics and gatherings, can face pressure from litter that threatens local ecosystems and Fiji’s pristine reputation. The clean-up at Natadola is part of a broader, nationwide push to keep beaches clean, safe, and welcoming for generations to come, while encouraging locals and visitors alike to protect Fiji’s natural treasures.

Editor’s notes and broader context:
– Fiji has seen a series of community and corporate-led cleanups, including projects at Suva Park and Pacific Harbour, underscoring a growing national culture of environmental stewardship.
– Partnerships between private sector, community groups, and government bodies are shaping long-term waste-management efforts and public awareness campaigns.
– The ongoing commitment to anti-litter campaigns and responsible waste disposal aims to preserve Fiji’s appeal as a world-class destination.

Summary of significance:
The Natadola Beach cleanup demonstrates strong corporate leadership in sustainability, complements national waste-reduction campaigns, and provides a tangible example of how shared responsibility can protect Fiji’s beaches for residents and visitors alike. The positive momentum suggests continued collaboration across sectors to sustain cleaner, healthier coastal spaces for years to come.
