The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced an initiative to enhance enforcement efforts to improve road safety during the festive season and reduce reckless driving. This strategy includes deploying additional officers for on-the-spot checks, monitoring speed limits, and ensuring compliance with regulations for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
The announcement comes in the wake of a serious road accident in Navuniasi, Naitasiri, where a driver lost control of a carrier vehicle, resulting in injuries to 13 students. LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that this incident underscores a troubling rise in road accidents, especially those involving PSV drivers. He expressed deep concern over the danger posed to passengers, particularly children, in such situations.
Rokosawa urged all drivers, especially those operating PSVs, to prioritize safety and strictly follow traffic regulations at all times. He highlighted the importance of adhering to road safety measures, particularly during adverse weather conditions that can complicate vehicle handling and visibility. Speeding remains a major contributor to road accidents, and drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits and traffic signs without exception.
Furthermore, he stressed the necessity for drivers to eliminate distractions, such as mobile phone use, while operating a vehicle, as these behaviors significantly elevate the risk of accidents. Fatigue and inattention are also key factors that can lead to severe consequences on the road.
The LTA Chief warned that drivers who jeopardize the safety of others will face stringent legal repercussions, including fines and potential suspension or revocation of their licenses in cases of extreme negligence. He reiterated that road safety is a collective responsibility, and any lapse could lead to dire outcomes.
Rokosawa concluded by asserting that the safety of Fijians is too valuable to lose to preventable mistakes, urging all drivers to treat road safety as a critical priority.
This commitment to road safety during festive periods not only protects lives but also fosters a culture of accountability and mindfulness among drivers. By taking proactive measures now, the LTA aims to enhance overall public safety, promoting responsible driving habits that can lead to a safer environment for all road users.
