Dean DeBlois, the director behind the beloved “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, has addressed concerns regarding remake fatigue in Hollywood. As the film industry seeks to attract family audiences back to theaters, it often relies on familiar stories, creating a mix of reactions among viewers. This summer, DeBlois aims to approach this challenge with integrity as he directs the live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which is set to release on June 25.
DeBlois emphasized the importance of delivering a well-crafted remake free from cynicism. “We wanted to make sure that if we were going to do it, it was with a lot of integrity and love,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to honoring the essence of the original animated films while bringing something fresh to the table.
Alongside DeBlois’s project, several anticipated family films are hitting theaters this summer, including the Rihanna-produced “Smurfs,” the Hawaii-shot “Lilo & Stitch,” and Pixar’s “Elio,” which tells the story of a space enthusiast’s dream of extraterrestrial encounters. These films, most of which are rated PG, are coming at a time when PG-rated movies are regaining their appeal at the box office. Last year, PG films comprised a third of the total box office earnings, led by successful titles like “Inside Out 2.”
As audiences begin to show renewed enthusiasm for quality family-friendly films, the film industry appears to be on an upswing, suggesting that viewers are eager for cinematic experiences that resonate emotionally. The upcoming releases not only provide entertainment but also contribute to a hopeful resurgence of the theatrical experience, inviting moviegoers back into theaters.
