Meleama Tumalevu, a talented winger for the Ba girl’s Under-14 rugby team, is playing with a heavy heart, dedicating her participation to her late mother who passed away in September due to breast cancer. Despite her grief, Tumalevu expressed gratitude for the presence of her father, who has been a source of support through this difficult time.

Reflecting on her mother’s encouragement during her rugby matches, Tumalevu recalled, “My mother used to advise me to be careful of injuries and play smart rugby.” Although her loss is profound, her father’s advice to focus on her abilities and not dwell excessively on her mother’s passing has helped her navigate this challenging period.

With aspirations of one day representing the Fijian Drua women’s team, Tumalevu draws inspiration from skilled players like Fijiana lock Asinate Serevi, admiring her agility and strength in both offensive and defensive play. Tumalevu also hopes to join Natabua High School or Ba Methodist High School, both of which have strong rugby programs for girls.

At just 14, Tumalevu is not only dedicated to rugby but also actively participates in athletics, including various relay events and netball, where she plays as Goal Attack. After experiencing a loss to Taveuni in the Vodafone Kaji rugby competition, her coach encouraged the team to elevate their game, as Tumalevu firmly believes in their potential to reach the finals and bring home the trophy to Ba.

Furthermore, she shares familial ties with former Fiji men’s sevens captain Waisea Nacuqu, adding a layer of pride to her journey. Tumalevu finds strength in her faith, inspired by the team’s motto and the belief that with perseverance and divine support, they can overcome any obstacle.

This story is not only about resilience in the face of personal loss but also about a young athlete’s determination to honor her mother’s legacy while pursuing her sporting dreams. Tumalevu’s journey serves as a reminder of the power of family, community support, and the strength found in adversity.

In summary, Tumalevu’s dedication to rugby and her future aspirations, coupled with her emphasis on family values and faith, highlights a hopeful narrative of perseverance, ambition, and the bonds that inspire young athletes to rise above challenges.
