Inspiring Recovery: One Patient’s Journey Through Physiotherapy at PSH

At Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospitals, the powerful impact of physiotherapy is evident every day through the stunning recoveries of patients. One standout story is that of Mr. Tau tu Paul, a neurorehabilitation patient, which highlights the dedication of PSH’s healthcare team and the exceptional care from neurosurgeon Dr. Alan Biribo.

“Three months ago, Mr. Tautu underwent a complex neurosurgical procedure, which initiated a challenging rehabilitation process,” stated PSH founder and director Parvish Kumar. “He had endured eight months of significantly limited mobility before the surgery, making even sitting up in bed a major struggle.”

His path to recovery began with a mix of anxiety and hope as he worked towards the first crucial milestone: sitting up without assistance. “As Mr. Tautu’s physiotherapist, I had the honor of guiding him and his supportive wife through these essential stages of recovery,” said Sonia Kajol, head of physiotherapy at PSH.

“Our initial goal was simple yet critical—helping him sit at the edge of the bed independently,” she explained. “Through careful mobilization techniques and consistent encouragement, we achieved this milestone. The significance of this moment fueled a renewed sense of hope and determination in Mr. Tau tu,” added Ms. Kajol.

From that moment, Mr. Tautu approached his rehabilitation with relentless determination. They set attainable goals, and his recovery was characterized by hard work and unwavering commitment. “We designed our physiotherapy sessions to focus on strengthening his core, improving balance, and enhancing mobility. As his confidence increased, so did the intensity of his sessions, reflecting his progress and resilience.”

In the weeks that followed, Mr. Tautu’s rehabilitation showed consistent improvement. Starting with a walking frame, he moved to a quadruped, then to a walking stick, and ultimately achieved independent walking. Each advancement was a testament to his determination and the personalized, patient-centered care offered by the rehabilitation team.

The emotional and physical milestones reached during Mr. Tautu’s rehabilitation held deep significance. Daily improvements brought renewed self-confidence. The moment he took his first steps unaided not only marked a personal victory but also a team achievement. His emotional response to reaching this major milestone serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative effects of physiotherapy.

“Seeing patients regain their independence highlights our dedication to outstanding rehabilitation care,” Ms. Kajol remarked. “At PSH, we take immense pride in our neurorehabilitation programs. Our multidisciplinary approach ensures personalized, comprehensive care tailored to each individual’s needs.”

She added, “Under Dr. Biribo’s expert guidance, we create customized treatment plans that emphasize patient recovery and well-being. Mr. Tautu’s story exemplifies our belief that with expert direction, personalized care, and patient determination, substantial recovery is possible.”

As they celebrate patients like Mr. Tautu, the team emphasizes the importance of rehabilitation in recovery, particularly for those facing neurological and complex medical conditions.

Mr. Kumar affirmed PSH’s commitment to empowering patients through advanced medical care, comprehensive rehabilitation services, and continuous support. “Our mission is not just to treat ailments but to restore independence, enhance quality of life, and instill hope for each person who seeks our care,” he said. “We work diligently to improve the quality of life for our patients and promote universal health coverage and the advancement of Fiji’s healthcare system.”
