At Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospitals, the transformative effects of physiotherapy are evident every day through the impressive recoveries of patients. One notable case is that of Mr. Tau tu Paul, a patient in neurorehabilitation, whose story highlights the commitment of PSH’s healthcare professionals and the exemplary care provided by the hospital’s renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Alan Biribo.

According to PSH founder and director Parvish Kumar, Mr. Tautu underwent a complex neurosurgical procedure three months ago, initiating a challenging rehabilitation process. Prior to the surgery, he struggled for eight months with severely limited mobility, finding it difficult even to sit up in bed.

His recovery journey began with a mix of apprehension and optimism as he aimed for his first major milestone: the ability to sit up unaided. “As Mr. Tautu’s physiotherapist, I was honored to assist him and his supportive wife during these critical stages,” said Sonia Kajol, head of physiotherapy at PSH.

“Our initial target was to motivate him to sit at the edge of the bed without support,” she explained. “Through tailored mobilization techniques and consistent encouragement, we achieved that significant milestone.” This achievement reignited Mr. Tautu’s hope and determination.

Following this pivotal moment, Mr. Tautu fully committed to his rehabilitation. He and his physiotherapy team set realistic goals, and his recovery was characterized by hard work and unwavering dedication. “Our sessions were strategically designed to focus on core strengthening, balance, and mobility,” Kajol added. As his confidence grew, the intensity of his sessions increased, reflecting his progress.

In the weeks to come, Mr. Tautu’s rehabilitation steadily advanced. Starting with a walking frame, he moved to a quadruped, then a walking stick, and eventually, he walked independently. Each step signified his perseverance and the highly personalized care from the rehabilitation team. The progress he made daily fostered a sense of renew confidence, culminating in the emotional moment when he walked unaided for the first time—a collective victory for the entire team.

“Witnessing patients regain their independence reinforces our commitment to excellence in rehabilitation care,” Kajol noted. She expressed pride in PSH’s neurorehabilitation programs, emphasizing their multidisciplinary approach which ensures each patient receives specialized care tailored to their specific needs.

Dr. Biribo’s expert leadership and the commitment of the physiotherapist team enable them to create individualized treatment plans that prioritize recovery and well-being. “Mr. Tautu’s experience exemplifies our philosophy: with skilled guidance, personalized care, and patient determination, genuine recovery is not just possible, it’s achievable,” Kajol stated.

As success stories like Mr. Tautu’s are celebrated, Kumar urged the community to acknowledge the vital role rehabilitation plays in recovery, especially for individuals facing neurological and other complex medical challenges.

PSH continues its dedication to empowering patients by providing advanced medical care and comprehensive rehabilitation services. Their mission extends beyond merely treating conditions; it aims to restore independence, enhance life quality, and inspire hope in those who trust the facility with their care.

“We are constantly looking for ways to enhance our patients’ quality of life, promote universal health coverage, and improve Fiji’s healthcare landscape,” Kumar added. PSH offers physiotherapy services at both its Suva and Nadi branches, and they are actively expanding these services while exploring advanced technologies for their facilities.

Additionally, their ongoing Pinktober campaign involves community outreach to educate women and families about female health and self-breast examination techniques.
