Fulori Diraboki, a student at Dravo District School, recently received recognition for her inspirational actions stemming from her commitment to care for her ailing mother. Her story was featured prominently after she was awarded the title of dux at the school in Tailevu.
In a ceremony attended by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya and her assistant Sashi Kiran, Fulori was honored alongside 14 other recipients with an award for her exceptional personal development. The Year 8 student struggled to hold back her tears when her name was called, reflecting on her resilience and the deep bond she shares with her mother, Timaleti Droceva, who has been bedridden for four years due to a serious spinal condition.
“I continue to thank God for His provisions in my life. Receiving this recognition felt unbelievable because I was just fulfilling my responsibilities as a daughter,” Fulori expressed. “Being acknowledged by the Minister is truly inspiring, and I am grateful for the strength God has given me.”
At just 13 years old, Fulori’s journey has been marked by obstacles and sacrifices. Originally attending Naduna Arya Pathshala School, her path shifted when her mother’s health declined significantly. With her older siblings unable to take on the caregiving role due to subject combinations, the responsibility fell to Fulori, reshaping her life completely.
“My daily routine involves bathing my sick mom, cleaning the house, cooking for her and preparing my own school lunch before heading to school,” she shared. Despite the heavy load of responsibilities at home, Fulori remained focused on her studies. She utilized evening and holiday classes to enhance her academic performance, demonstrating a particularly strong commitment to mathematics despite previous struggles.
Fulori’s dedication to her education and her family serves as a powerful testimony to her character and capabilities. Her story highlights the extraordinary strength of young individuals when faced with difficult circumstances.
