Akanisi Latu is making headlines as she prepares to represent Fiji in table tennis at the Pacific Mini Games, which are set to take place in Palau from June 29 to July 7. At 67, Latu’s journey in sports is both inspiring and remarkable, having only taken up the sport in 2014 at the age of 59. Despite being diagnosed with polio as an infant and using a wheelchair throughout her life, she has successfully carved out a place for herself in the competitive world of para-table tennis.
Latu expressed her surprise at how her love for the sport has transformed her life, stating, “When I started playing, I never imagined I would travel overseas because of table tennis.” Her dedication to the sport has seen her compete internationally, including at the 2015 championships in Australia and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England, showcasing her skills on various prestigious stages.
As she reflects on her experiences, Latu speaks of the pride she feels wearing Fiji’s colors, noting the empowerment she derives from competing among other talented para-athletes. “It makes me proud to be a woman with a disability representing Fiji,” she affirms, highlighting her commitment to inspire others. Latu acknowledges the challenges she faces, particularly in transportation, but she has expressed gratitude towards the Fijian Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) for their support throughout her journey.
In the upcoming Mini Games, she aims to perform her best, having set her sights on winning gold but ultimately prioritizing the opportunity to give her all for Fiji. Latu will be joined by fellow para-athlete Merewalesi Rodan, both of whom exemplify the spirit of resilience in Fiji’s sports community.
The stories of athletes like Latu resonate strongly with the narratives of other competitors preparing for the Mini Games, emphasizing the power of perseverance and community support in their journeys. As Fiji’s para-athletes gear up for this significant event, there is an undercurrent of hope and anticipation, showcasing not only their commitment to sport but also their determination to uplift their nation’s pride on an international platform.
