Former Flying Fijian rugby star Vilimoni Delasau has become a beacon of inspiration in the Fijian rugby community, showcasing the power of determination and self-belief. At 48 years old, Delasau reflects on his journey, which began with a steadfast vision to wear the national jersey. Devoting an entire year to rigorous training, he faced skepticism from those around him but remained resolute in his aspirations.
Delasau’s hard work paid off when he made his debut for Fiji on June 30, 2000, during a match against the United States, which Fiji won 37-21. His talent on the field led him to participate in two Rugby World Cups in 2003 and 2007. Though he experienced a setback in 1999 due to suspension from a sevens tournament, this obstacle did not define his career; instead, he went on to set four records in both the 7s and 15s formats.
In his current role, Delasau serves as the Director of Rugby for the Ba Rugby Union, contributing to the development of the sport in Fiji. His journey mirrors that of many young players today, like Akuila Dranivotua and Samuela Ledua, who are carving out their own paths in Fijian rugby amidst challenges and aspirations to represent their country.
Dranivotua’s story, highlighted in recent tournaments, echoes the same themes of ambition and perseverance. At just 24 years old, he dreams of achieving international success, while Ledua’s journey from the small maritime village of Waitabu to the competitive rugby scene illustrates the transformative potential of sports for youth in Fiji.
As these young athletes pursue their dreams, they embody the spirit of hope that Delasau and others have instilled in the Fijian rugby community, confirming that with dedication, hard work, and unwavering faith in oneself, it is possible to achieve great heights in sports.
