Monica Ting is a remarkable 22-year-old whose commitment to helping others often surpasses her personal ambitions. A recent graduate from the University of the South Pacific, Monica comes from a large family of ten siblings and was raised in Labasa, where her parents instilled strong values in her.
Her father, a dedicated farmer, and her mother, a supportive housewife, have been influential figures in her life. Monica shares that one of her father’s unique methods of motivation was to offer an incentive: the sibling who topped their class would accompany him to Suva. Seizing that opportunity, she excelled academically, which spurred her onward to further education.
After attending St John’s College in Ovalau, she set her sights on a career in healthcare. Although she initially aimed to study medicine, she faced challenges with her admission to Fiji National University. Relying on her faith, she decided to enroll in a Bachelor of Science program at USP instead, believing that sometimes life’s detours lead to fulfilling paths.
During her studies, Monica faced significant hardships, including displacement caused by a devastating fire that destroyed her home. Yet, with the support of her cousin, Dr. Maria Ting, and a strong sense of faith, she persevered through the difficulties of university life, maintaining her focus on her studies.
Graduation was an emotional milestone for Monica, especially since her parents could not attend. However, she felt blessed to be supported by her siblings and close friends who have been integral to her academic journey. Looking towards the future, she aspires to work in a laboratory or classroom, sharing her knowledge and experiences with others. Traveling is also on her list of goals, as she dreams of exploring the world.
Monica advises the younger generation to stay grounded in their values and prioritize God in their decision-making. Her story is one of resilience and dedication, showcasing that even in the face of adversity, with faith and support, one can achieve their dreams.
This inspiring narrative not only highlights the challenges Monica has overcome but also serves as a beacon of hope for others facing difficulties. Her emphasis on prioritizing faith and education serves as a valuable lesson for many.
