Anushka Ashika Chand celebrated a significant milestone when she graduated with honors in Nursing from the University of Fiji, a moment filled with emotion and gratitude for her parents’ unwavering support. The 27-year-old was one of many students to graduate from the Lautoka campus last week, and she spoke openly about how her parents’ sacrifices deeply impacted her journey.
Chand’s journey took an unexpected turn when her father suffered a minor stroke, prompting her to take a semester off. This setback initially discouraged her from returning to university, but she found inspiration in her father’s longstanding wish for her to become a nurse. His encouragement and determination reignited her passion for nursing and led her back to her studies.
Despite facing challenges in the admission process, as she lacked a Year 13 qualification, Chand’s parents financially supported her education by withdrawing funds from their FNPF savings. It was this commitment that allowed her to complete her degree. “I stand here today because of them. All that I am today, I owe to them,” she expressed, highlighting the emotional significance of their presence at her graduation.
As the first nurse in her family, her accomplishments mean more than just personal success. Chand plans to continue her education further, with aspirations to specialize in midwifery. She encourages young women to remain hopeful and appreciate the undeniable support of their parents, stating, “If you have them beside you, you can achieve anything.”
This story not only emphasizes the power of family support in pursuing education but also serves as an inspiration to others facing obstacles in their academic journeys. Chand’s determination and resilience are testaments to the strength found in overcoming adversity, providing a hopeful message for aspiring nurses and students alike.
