China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, recently delivered an inspiring speech during an open day at the Chinese Embassy, encouraging Chinese students to stay in Fiji and contribute to the nation’s growth. He underscored the long-standing presence of Chinese immigrants in Fiji, which dates back to the early 19th century, and highlighted the significant impact they have had over the past 170 years. Today, the Chinese community comprises around 10,000 individuals within Fiji’s diverse population of over 900,000, showcasing their deep integration into the local culture.
Zhou emphasized the importance of academic excellence and urged the students to leverage their education for the betterment of Fiji. He stated, “In the future, become a talented person. Build Fiji into a beautiful country. Write your own stories. Respect others. The library is always your home.” This reflects his belief that education is a crucial pathway for both personal and national development.
Additionally, he called on the younger generation to honor their heritage and uphold the aspirations of their ancestors, who sought a better life through hard work and perseverance. Ambassador Zhou envisioned a strong sense of unity and collaboration among the diverse communities in Fiji.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Zen Low, Executive Director of Zens Medical Centers, shared his experiences demonstrating how embracing diverse cultures has been pivotal to his success. He highlighted the essential values of respect and wisdom passed down through generations as foundational to achieving a fulfilling life.
This gathering was particularly meaningful as it celebrated two significant anniversaries: the 50th year of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji and the 170th anniversary of Chinese settlement in the country. These milestones further illustrate the crucial role the Chinese community plays in both the economic and cultural fabric of Fiji.
Zhou’s message to the students to play an active role in Fiji’s future fosters a hopeful perspective for continued cooperation among different ethnic groups and promotes national progress. The developing ties between China and Fiji, based on mutual respect and understanding, point towards a promising future for both nations.
